The San Diego Armed Services YMCA's programs and services contribute to the wellness of the entire military and have directly effected military readiness for the past 80 years. These programs continue to grow and respond to the changing needs of more than 250,000 active-duty military members and their families in our San Diego community. Highlights of the four program departments include the following:
Family Outreach
This department provides counseling services to military families at no charge. During 1999, ASYMCA staff members served more than 2,100 people through in-home crisis counseling visits, giving support and education on a one-to-one basis to junior enlisted members and their families who encounter economic, emotional, physical or situational problems. Almost 100 active-duty mothers to be participated in parenting classes to prepare them for baby's arrival. Each year, the holiday food and toy drive serves 350 military families with food baskets and gifts to more than 700 children in an effort to alleviate some of the added financial strain that could occur during the holiday season.
Youth and Community Outreach
The Mobile After-School program provides services to more than 70 school-aged children of enlisted military families each week. Funmobile activities include sports, crafts and games. Each activity promotes positive social skills and a strong value system. The Mom and Tots program helps 45 young mothers each week with creative ways of improving their parenting and communication skills.
Naval Medical Center Program
Much of the support work the ASYMCA sponsors takes place at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and encompasses three separate support groups for military families with children who have cancer, autism or other developmental needs. These groups provide much-needed support to more than 125 military personnel and their families. The Recreation Therapy program provides active-duty military patients with crafts, board games, books, guitars, movies and field trips. The ASYMCA also provides services for military families and their babies through the Immunization Tracking program, the Neonatal Intensive Care unit reunion, and the Infant Car Seat Loan program.
Active Duty Programs
These programs are held at on-base centers and include various recreational outings throughout San Diego. Programs in 1999 served more than 6,700 service personnel throughout and about tours, MCRD's Liberty Lounge and the Military Volunteer program, which offers active-duty personnel the opportunity to get involved with their community.

Commissary patrons purchase items at cost plus a five percent surcharge, which covers the construction of new commissaries and the modernization of older stores.
Patrons enjoy substantial savings on their purchases. Typical families of four regularly shopping in the commissary can save more than $2,000 a year. These savings enhance the quality of life for America's military and their families.
Visit us at our website at www.commissaries.com to learn more about your favorite store or search for special savings programs and sales. Commissaries value your input. Contact your commissary manager; fill out a customer comment card at any store or log on to our website.

There are more ways for you to finish high school, get an associate's, bachelor's or advanced degree than you can imagine. An education specialist at any one of the Navy College Offices located on all major installations n the San Diego area is available to explain the line-up of educational programs suited for military people, even those who deploy.
Don't let going to sea or having duty that requires a lot of travel elsewhere hinder your desire to advance your education.
Military members are eligible for Tuition Assistance, a funded benefit that directly pays for a significant percentage of the tuition set by the school of your choice.
Some schools give credit for the experience and military schools you already have acquired and recorded in your service record.
All you need to do is go to the Navy College Office on the installation closest to you. Your Navy College Office can assist you in establishing your education plan.

Seminars are designed to teach the fundamentals of California divorce law (with emphasis on special military issues such as retirement) in a group setting. Legal assistance attorneys will then assist clients individually through the uncontested divorce process after they have attended the seminars. Call (619) 556-2211, DSN 526-2211 for seminar days and times. Legal assistance attorneys may also provide general advice to clients involved in contested divorces. The San Diego Unified School District is the eighth largest urban school district in the country and provides a variety of educational programs and options for students in kindergarten through high school. The district serves most of the metropolitan area within the city limits of San Diego.
Public schools in California primarily are funded through state funds allocated through the annual state budget process. Education funding has not increased as rapidly in California as it has in other states, and class sizes tend to be larger in all public schools in California. The average class size in San Diego for first- and second-graders is about 25 students; at grades three to six, it is about 30 students; in middle school, the average is 34 students; and high school classrooms average 35 students.
San Diego City schools operate a system of neighborhood schools, with all children eligible to attend the school serving their residential address unless the school is severely overcrowded. In overcrowded schools, the district assigns new students to a school with space and provides free transportation.
Parents also have options to send their children to schools outside the neighborhood by enrolling eligible students in the district's magnet programs or the School Choice Program. Magnet programs in 45 schools offer specialized curriculum the district cannot afford to provide in all schools. Programs range from a strong emphasis on science, math and computers to creative and performing arts, from foreign language to Montessori.
The School Choice Program provides enrollment options for students who reside within the district boundaries and who wish to attend a school other than the school of residence. Although some schools in the district are operating at capacity and cannot accept CP students, others have space available for interested families. The district does not provide transportation for this program.
The district also operates an extensive program for students with exceptional needs, including programs for academically gifted students and programs for students with special needs.
Most schools, including all high schools, operate on a traditional calendar with school starting in early September and ending about the middle of June. There are 48 schools operating on year-round schedules. These schools also begin their year in September, but stagger the 180 days of instruction over the entire year, rather than nine months and give students three vacation periods.
San Diego County has 43 independent school districts that provide educational programs for elementary and secondary school children. Each school system is governed by a locally elected board of education. School district and city boundaries are not necessarily contiguous.
In San Diego County, there are three types of school districts: elementary, high school and unified. Unified districts contain both elementary and secondary grades. All school districts offer basic education programs, as well as special programs and services.
Contact with an individual school district is the best way to learn about school calendars, facilities, curriculum, graduation requirements, extracurricular activities and other areas that differ from district to district.
For more information, contact the San Diego County Office of Education located at 6401 Linda Vista Road, San Diego, CA 92111, (858) 292-3500. Or visit www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us.
A Home Away From Home
The USO is a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization established in 1941, to meet the needs of American armed forces and their families. The San Diego USO supports the largest population of active-duty members and their families in the United States, including those who regularly deploy to trouble spots worldwide.
Currently, there are two USO facilities in San Diego. The USO Main Center, at 303 A Street, suite 100, opened in August 1995. Approximately 250 volunteers assist the professional staff by contributing 3,800 hours of service each month. Volunteers assist with 16,000 visitors each year.
The newer Neil Ash USO Airport Center located at Terminal 2, at Lindbergh Field, serves traveling military personnel and their families. The airport center provides services to more than 75,000 military members and their families annually.
Today's San Diego USO is involved in everything from emergency services and referrals to entertainment. As an extension of family, the USO offers information, family activities, free Tuesday night meals for families, and a strong sense of stability. The downtown facility offers an opportunity for leisurely reading, hot showers, dancing, video games and free access to computers for Internet or email use to connect with deployed service members and families outside the San Diego area.
The San Diego USO Emergency Housing program is in place to respond when all other alternatives have been exhausted. The USO of San Diego provides up to 60 days of cost-free housing, which includes furniture, utensils, bedding and food supplies when available.
Eligibility and necessary details are worked out between the client, their command and the USO.
For more information, call the USO Main Center at (619) 235-6503 and the USO Airport Center at (619) 296-3192.
